Is a credit monitoring service a waste of money?
I had it for a few months because I was in the process of getting a house and I wanted to get rid of debt. Now that i have a house I want to cancel it because it will save be 14.95 a month. But, I was also thinking of keeping if for id theft protection but it is worth it? Should I just get the yearly free credit report?
Yes, it is a waste of money if:
1) You get your free credit report on a regular basis. By this I mean get your Experian now, get your Transunion in 4 months and your Expedia one four months after that. Repeat in one year. This is a good way to monitor your credit.
2) Shred all personal mail before trashing/recycling.
3) Never give out personal details online or over the phone.
4) Examine all credit card bills etc. for any charges that you do not recognize.
All this is sufficient and free.
