Credit Report Discrepency???
Our cable company contacted my husband saying that he owed them a past due balance of over $300.00. Of course, we currently have service through this same cable company and are not past due on our account. After much argument with the rep. from the company my husband realized that the past due debt actually belonged to his father. (they have the same name, my husband is a ‘JR’) The past due debt did not have a SSN associated with the acct so they just picked a name that matched. A supervisor reviewed our account and realized that we had paid our bill on time for the past 13 years and could even see the transfer from our previous residence to our current residence in 2000 and agreed to remove the collection from my husband’s report. However, the supervisor called back to let my husband know that since he previously lived at the address where the debt was incurred they would not remove the collection. He lived there BEFORE we got married. How do we get this debt off my husbands report?
Once creditors are aware that there is a dispute about an amount which they are reporting, they have an obligation to investigate and remove erroneous information. The first step is to write a letter to the 3 major credit bureas disputing the debt with copies to the cable company. This will remove the debt for 30 days while the company investigates. Check back after 30 days to see if the information has been put back on your credit report. If it has at that point you will need to file suit to have it removed permanently.
