What percentage of Yahoo Answers are spam?
I keep seeing questions such as “How can I get my free credit report” and answers that give a commercial website. If you look at the history of each user ID, you can see that those are teams, and that there are a lot of members of each team, and that English is not their native language. It makes me wonder if there are spam companies in China and other such places, where their full time business is to post spam on different websites, and they might have thousands of full time employees working for $3 per day each, doing nothing but visiting different websites all day every day to post spam. They might have quotas of how many spam messages they have to post per day, etc. But who pays the company to post the spam? Do they get customers in the USA and other such countries, companies that want to advertise cheaply, so they sign up with a spam company in China? Or what?
Could Yahoo fix this problem by simply blocking all access from China and other such spam-prone countries?
1: Yahoo can’t block all access from China and other spam-prone countries, since most of those countries have their own YA pages, and also no matter where in the world you are registered, you can participate on any country’s YA site as long as you use the country specific language.
2: Most of the spam doesn’t get posted by real life users, it’s often spambots spreading the junk all over this place. And they often use redirecting scripts which can easily fool Yahoo.
3: Yes, the companies behind such spam are paying programmers to create spambots, but that is just peanuts to them compared to how much money they still make through customers who fall for their scams.
4: Yahoo relies on the users to report spam whenever they see it, which is often very time consuming. It is a never ending story also, because as soon as a fake spambot account gets deleted, they simply open another account and return within minutes…:-(
