When will bad credit fall off my credit report?
I know that negative reports on my credit report stay on for seven years but I’m wondering how soon they will fall off. For example, if something negative was reported in June of 2002, does that mean it wont fall off my report until June 2009 or will it come off 1/1/09? Is it just me or is seven years too long to be punishing someone? Does anyone know if the “seven year” rule will ever be lessened?
Per the Fair Credit Reporting Act derogatory accounts show for 7-years from the date of first delinquency which works out to 7-years and 180-days so if your account went delinquent in June 2002 it would show until December of 2009. And no as of now there is no indication of this law changing.
This is Federal law and has nothing to do with the statutes of limitations which are State laws.
