Magazine telemarketing scam?

A while back in july i received a phone call in which i was asked to subscribe to some magazines. i went ahead and gave them my card number but it got to a point where they wanted to record me verbally agreeing to the payments. at this point i hung up . i was never charged at all and even cancelled my card. a couple of months later i received a call from what i believe was the same company. the tele-marketer then said that for being so patient and a good customer or something along those lines that they were going to send me something for free and the call quickly ended. but i have begun to worry because even though the first time i never agreed to anything i dont recall if i gave them my social security number or not. i dont remember at all if i did. my question is whether they have my SS or not can they send a collection agency after me? i am contacting equifax tomorrow and having them send my credit report. should i be worried? if something is wrong will it be easy to fight?

First lesson, never buy anything from an unsolicited phone call or someone knocking on your door. It’s never a good deal and often a scam. Just say, “No, thank you.” and hang up.

Second, they don’t need your SS# to report something to the credit bureaus. Just your name and address can be enough. But instead of rushing to check your credit report, wait about 45 days. Your report tomorrow will be clean but if the company is pulling something fishy, it wouldn’t show for 45 to 60 days.

Should you receive a package, you might want to just return it unopened or very carefully go thru every scrap of paper. Chances are there’s some kind of trial service and you’ll get hit with charges on down the road.
