landlord sent me to collections however they can not find my file to proof that i owe them fees.?

I was looking at my credit report and there is a negative mark from a collection agency stating that i owe money to my current landlord for a different unit a was renting. The weir thing is that my landlord can’t find my previous file and therefore they have no idea why i owe them money. I tried disputing with equifax, experian and trans-union and the CA was able to verify that this account belongs to me. Not sure what to do now.. If my landlord can’t find my file and prove why i owe them money then how do i know this is not a scam…. By the way i haven’t even receive a letter form the CA..any advise?

Thanks,
i called the CA and they don’t have a judgment but they are refusing to send me a letter stating how much money i owe them. They told me that they dont have to prove anything to me cause they already did it before. Never got anything from them..

As others have said, demand a letter validating their claim that they have a debt against you.

The only way that you can end up with a default regarding rent is if a property manager/landlord won a judgment against you. If you landlord is saying that that was never done, nor that you don’t owe them money then have your landlord speak with both the CA and the credit bureaus. The landlord would have been the initiator of any attempt to collect, and he can tell them that no such action was taken.

Now, if your landlord is playing dumb and acting like he didn’t send you to collections but did, I’d recommend contacting an attorney.

No, the collection agency has to send you proof of the debt. Telling you that they’ve verified the debt is in your name is insufficient.
