how do i find out if i have an eviction?

i had moved out of an apartment before i got an eviction notice my roommate left me with the whole contract and i couldnt pay for it all by myself. so i moved out and went to my mothers for a year iam trying to get into an apt so i looked up my annual free credit report but it didnt say anything about an eviction but it also didnt say that it wasnt it just said that i owed 2,653 dollars and it got sent to collections. i dont want to have to pay inoreder to find out and i dont want to have to turn in a apt application and pay the process fee does anyone have any suggestions please iam about to become homeless

You can go to the local court’s website in the city you lived in and be able to pull up if you had an eviction. Call the court and explain what you are trying to find and they’ll point you in the right direction where you need to look next. Those records are public records and all you really need to do is type in your social security number and if you have anything against you, it will come up. The apartment building has to file this with the courts. So if you were technically evicted, it will show up on the court records. Plus, if it shows on your credit report that you owe money to an apartment complex, the new landlord is going to know wha that means. Hope this helps!
