free clean credit report services
Fell for phishing scam but canceled credit card right away. Now I get phone “offers” on old acct, won’t stop!

Two years ago I answered a false account information inquiry from “AOL”. After giving vital info including credit card #, I realized I had been scammed. I was able to cancel the credit card before any charges were made. AOL eventually told me a scammer had been caught. My credit report has been clean since then. Now, two years later I am getting repeated phone calls from “your credit card acct #XXXX” corresponding to the account which was cancelled. They are trying to offer me “free offers” and they keep calling back even after I say no or hang up on them. I assume somebody sold them my credit card information. My caller I.D. gives me a number 727-541-0001, but if I try to call this number I get an automated message saying the number is not in service. What kind of a scam is this and how do I make them stop????

Step one: Put your name on the “Do Not Call” list. Go to https://www.donotcall.gov/default.aspx

If they call, you now have some additional charges to hit them with.

In the meantime, file a police report. I’m going to bet they won’t do anything, but it does two things. 1) Established a police report for future prosecution, 2) if you actually have a police department that does anything they can easily get the identification of the phone number. With that you can file complaints with the FTC (again fairly worthless, but at this state you want a paper trail.)

In the meantime, get as much information from them as you can. When the offer something, get call back info, name, mailing address, whatever they are silly enough to give out. As for literature to be mailed to you.

Eventually you will develop enough to go after them.
