Looking for housing on Craigslist, warnings of possible scammers?
I was recently browsing the Craigslist housing section to find a new place, and I ended up e-mailing someone about a property. They e-mailed me back saying that they want me to do a free online credit report before they will set up anything further, to verify my eligibility as a tenant. I will admit to being totally ignorant about this kind of thing, but is that normal? The ad I responded to had pictures of the property and everything, but they will not disclose the address…is this a scam of some kind?
Also, shortly after I e-mailed them, the posting for that property was removed, either by them or by Craigslist.
This concerns me that they took it off so quickly. They should do the credit report themselves not you. They should also give you the address to see the property, check your photo ID and see your social security card when you apply. To see the place, only a photo ID is required. When they do pull an application on you most likely they will check your income, prior housing and your credit. After that they will have you sign a lease. All of this is for their and your protection.
