Free Credit Reports Every Year

How do you get the free credit report we’re all supposed to be able to get by law?
I’ve tried calling all three agencies, I’ve tried their web sites, and I’ve tried that annualcreditreport.com site–which just takes you back to those three agencies. The screens time out or something every time. Each person by law is supposed to get one free a year so what’s the secret, anybody know? Every one of these sites is in-your-face with buy this or buy that–but so far I can find nothing to click on for the free one. Thanks!
Two days later: Thanks a bunch for all the help so far! I think my cellphone was malfunctioning when I tried to call (perhaps because of a storm), but I can’t imagine why the computer screens seemed so hard to use when that never gives me a problem. I’ll try again, but more suggestions would be welcome!
AnnualCreditReport.com is the only government approved site to receive your free reports. No credit card required.
Once you pick your state, fill out the information on the next page, you need to pick which bureau you want to get your report from, then answer a few id security questions.
Yes, you will be directed to each bureau’s website. But as long as you got there by following the ACR link, it will still be free.
You can also call or print an order form and receive your free reports by mail. ACR’s website has all the details.
The IRS’ Free File Alliance follows the same principle. The IRS’ FFA partners offer free tax preparation services, but you must follow the provided link in order to get free tax preparation. If you go the actual tax service without following the link provided by the IRS, you will eventually get charged for it.
