Free Credit Reports Tenant Screening
2010

Is is possible to have a screening on me, without my knowledge or consent?
I just did my free annual credit report, and it came back with one inquiry that puzzled me. The Screening Group via Universal Credit Service has done a check on me. They listed the permissible purpose as: Tenant Screening. I’m unfamiliar with both groups, and I don’t recall signing anything that would give them permission to do so… I thought tenant screening was for people signing leases on apartments and houses (I have done no such thing). Did I miss something?
Yes, you are supposed to give written authorization before housing people can run a check on you.
It sounds like this may have been a case of mistaken identity–they were really checking on someone with the same name.
Still, I’d submit a complaint to the credit bureau, saying that you never gave permission, or have had any business dealings with company. Let them check into who these people are and whether they had the right to run a query on you. If the company can’t provide a good reason, they are in violation of the law and there are financial penalties.
