Could someone be stealing my identity?
I just tried to get my free credit report online but all three agencies told me that “for my protection, they cannot give me my report online and I must request one through the mail.” It says I either have a Security Freeze on my credit file, an Active Duty Military or Fraud Alert, or the identification info submitted may not match the information on file. Does this mean that someone is using my identity?
I contacted Experian and they gave me another number to call and I keep getting one of those recordings that ask for your info. but I never get a real person. The number Experian gave me was to the annual credit report place.
Probably not. It can mean various things, but probably not identity theft. You need to contact Experian directly and ask them what is going on. The online site may be saying that simply to get you to spend more money. Do not get credit information from anyone other than Experian directly. Almost everyone else in the credit report game is trying to rip you off. Experian manages the data, they create the reports, and they are the only ones you should ask about it.
Equifax is the other major credit reporting agency, and the same thing applies to them. Ask them… nobody else.

The “Free credit report online” is one of the biggest internet scams currently. You credit report is ALWAYS free up to twice a year. This is enforced by law. What these scammers are trying to do is offering you something for free, which is already free to begin with, and then they try to sell you services on top of that. Often times they will sign you up for the service and charge you for it, whether you asked for it or not. In addition, they are notoriously hard to cancel.
Again… credit reports are already free! Get them from the sources that create them… not from scammers.
