Landlord Credit Report Checking
2010
If I want to move into an apartment, can the lease holder ask for my bank info and a credit report?
I want to move into an apartment with three other girls who go to college (I just met them when I looked at the apt.) They at first said I didn’t need a credit check or anything, since they knew I was in school, just a letter of reference and a statement saying I use loans to pay for rent.
But now they are asking for all this other info, like a credit report, names and phone numbers of creditors, bank account #s… It just seems like way too much info, since it’s not even a landlord asking for it, it’s just one of the girls in the apartment.
I don’t think they are doing anything shady, I just think they don’t really know what they are doing, and I don’t really feel comfortable giving all this info to them.
Is that normal? Should they even be checking my credit if I’m not on the lease?
It looks like they just found a generic rental application from the internet and are trying to get me to fill it out, which is why it is requiring bank accounts, etc.
Sounds like they just want to be sure they aren’t allowing someone to move in that has a history of bad debt or not paying their rent.. You should ask them if they’d accept a credit report you got for them. Tell them you don’t feel comfortable giving out your social security number.. If they agree, go to freecreditreport.com or one of those type sites and get your own credit report. That should satisfy them, and you’ll have the peace of mind of knowing that you didn’t turn over so much information about yourself.
