Can this be disputed on a credit report successfully?
The apartment landlord did not refund the security deposit and on top of that reporting a $150 dollar cleaning bill owed to a collection agency which resulted in a negative listing on a credit report.
It may be disputed on the credit report. But the problem should be fixed before then. Typically, an apartment cleaning bill will be deducted from what you expect to receive of a refundable security deposit. That may be why you didn’t get your deposit back. But if this is true, then the cleaning bill should have been paid for.
But even if the cleaning bill wasn’t completely paid for, the apartment complex management should have contacted you to get you to pay for the balance before sending it to a collection agency, because they can’t just sell an account without trying to contact you first. Therefore, you need to contact the management company of the apartment complex and find out what their actions were and they need to prove that they did everything they could to try to contact you. If they can’t prove it, demand them to send a letter to the collection agency to revoke the sellout of the account and get a copy to send to all the credit bureaus.
